How do you ensure complex technical systems—whether in defence, infrastructure, or industry—remain effective, adaptable, and sustainable over their entire lifecycle?
This tutorial presents System Lifecycle Management (SLCM) as an organizational and enterprise capability that is enabled by effective Systems Engineering. Building on the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook, ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 Systems and Software Engineering, and NATO policy and standards—including the NATO Policy for Systems Life Cycle Management and NATO Configuration Management standards—the tutorial explains how systems engineering concepts and practices provide the technical foundation for managing capability through its entire life cycle. Requirements engineering, architecture definition, verification and validation, configuration management, logistics, and technical management are presented as enablers of coherent lifecycle control. The session also introduces a capability model as a practical mechanism for assessing and improving SLCM maturity.
SLCM often is mostly recognized in aerospace and defence, but is as applicable in civil and commercial applications. The relationship to ISO 55000 Asset Management will be discussed. SLCM is about ensuring your systems deliver value throughout their lifecycle, no matter the sector.
